The OR Black Box® record key aspects of surgeries, including video, audio, and environmental data, to help surgeons analyze their performance and improve patient safety. By capturing real-time information, these devices allow surgeons and medical teams to review their procedures, identify errors, and refine techniques in a way similar to how athletes use video analysis to enhance their performance.

The project aims to reduce preventable errors in surgery, a major source of hospital mistakes, and improve training for new surgeons by providing feedback on areas for improvement. While there are concerns about privacy and the potential for "shame and blame," Grantcharov emphasizes that the goal is to use the data for quality improvement, not to penalize individuals. The technology could significantly enhance patient care, decrease healthcare costs, and eventually set a new standard in surgical training and safety protocols.
