Aimbient Rebrand:
Frequently Asked Questions
01
Why did Surgical Safety Technologies rebrand to Aimbient?
Surgical Safety Technologies became Aimbient because the company has grown beyond what the original name could hold. We started in surgery, with a focus on helping teams objectively understand and improve care inside the operating room. Over time, the platform expanded across the procedural environment and began supporting a broader set of priorities: operational efficiency, quality, safety, compliance, education, and real-time visibility. Aimbient reflects where the company is now: no longer just the OR, no longer just safety, but an ambient AI platform built to help hospitals improve how every procedure is run, measured, and learned from.
02
What does the name "Aimbient" mean?
Aimbient reflects two ideas. First, it captures what we believe AI should be in high-risk procedural environments: ambient, intelligent, and never in the way. Aimbient is designed to support surgeons, nurses, and care teams with a clearer picture of what is happening in the moment, without replacing human judgment. Second, the “Aim” in Aimbient reflects the outcomes health systems are working toward, including the Quadruple Aim: better outcomes, better patient experience, better clinician experience, and lower cost of care. In procedural care, those goals cannot be solved through disconnected point solutions. Safety, quality, efficiency, education, and team performance are deeply linked. Aimbient brings those priorities together in one procedural intelligence platform, helping hospitals improve clinical, operational, and financial performance as part of one connected system.

What happened to the “Black Box” name?
We are retiring the “Black Box” name and renaming the Black Box Platform to the Aimbient Suite. The Black Box name served us well early on. The parallel with aviation helped people quickly understand the value of objective data, real-world review, and continuous improvement in high-risk environments. But we have outgrown the term. “Black Box” can suggest something opaque, retrospective, or only relevant when something goes wrong. That is not what Aimbient is. The Aimbient Suite is transparent, proactive, and built for the full procedural environment. It brings together predictive, real-time, and retrospective intelligence to help hospitals improve how procedural care is run, measured, and continuously improved.
04
What happened to Surgical Safety Technologies (SST)?
SST is now Aimbient. The company previously known as Surgical Safety Technologies has rebranded to Aimbient to reflect the broader scope of the platform. The work, team, and commitment to continuous improvement remain the same. The name now better represents the full procedural environment we support. For customers, partners, and hospitals that previously worked with SST, this is a continuation of the same company and the same mission. Existing customers will receive direct communication about any practical updates related to the transition.
05
What is procedural ambient AI?
Procedural ambient AI is AI built for the real-world environment where procedures happen. Aimbient captures and analyzes procedural data from the room — including video, audio, device telemetry, and workflow signals — to help teams understand what happened, what is happening, and what is likely to happen next. It works across the full procedural timeline: before the case, during the case, and after the case.
